Course Meeting Times
Lectures: 2 sessions / week, 1.5 hours / session
Overview
The course covers British literature and culture during Queen Victoria’s long reign, 1837-1901. This was the brilliant age of Charles Dickens, the Brontës, Lewis Carroll, George Eliot, Robert Browning, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, Alfred, Lord Tennyson - and many others. It was also the age of urbanization, steam power, class conflict, Darwin, religious crisis, imperial expansion, information explosion, bureaucratization - and much more.
Fiction, nonfiction, and poetry are included. The syllabus may vary depending on the faculty member teaching the course.
Course Requirements
- Use the editions specified above and bring appropriate book(s) to class.
- No more than two unexcused absences.
- Either two papers (midterm and final) totaling approximately 15-20 pages, or midterm paper (approximately 6-8 pp.) and cumulative final exam. Along with the first paper topic, I will distribute a list of guidelines for the format of your papers.
All your papers must conform to these guidelines or I won’t accept them. Any papers turned in late will receive an F, unless prior arrangements have been made.
